Linggo ng Katandaang PilipinoOctober 1, 2011 to October 7, 2011

On December 3, 1982, the United Nations (UN) adopted General Assembly Resolution No. 37/51 to pursue an international Action Plan on Aging. Pursuant to this UN Resolution, then President Fidel V. Ramos issued on September 26, 1994 Presidential Proclamation No. 470 declaring October 1 to 7 as Elderly Filipino Week (Linggo ng Katandaang Pilipino). The proclamation aims to promote public awareness of the rights and wellbeing of older persons in the country, focus the public's attention on their plight, address their pressing needs, and recognize their many contributions in nation-building. It also highlights the important role older persons play as role models for the youth as well as for society. This years theme is Nakakatanda: Kaagapay sa Pagkakaisa at Kapayapaan. Our annual celebration of Elderly Filipino Week reaffirms the Filipinos' traditional high regard for the elderly. It would also motivate and reinforce the elderly Filipinos' will to continue to actively participate in local and national developmental efforts. The celebration would also encourage their families and the communities to value and promote the ancient tradition of caring for the elderly.
