Kalinga is a landlocked province lying on the central part of the Cordillera Administrative Region. It is bounded on the north by the province of Apayao, on the east by Cagayan and Isabela, on the west by Abra and on the south by Mt. Province.

<<Physical Profile

A glance at the Philippine map shows the uncanny likeness of the physiography of Kalinga to the bust of a man akin to President Ferdinand E. Marcos. The province’s geographic feature is characterized on the western portion by sharp-crested interlinking peaks of steep slopes, isolated flat lands, plateaus and valleys. The eastern portion is generally rolling to gradually sloping foothills, with interlocking wide tracks of flat lands and flood plains along its main drainage system.

Kalinga has a total land area of 3,071 sq. km. having a topography that is generally rugged and sloping, with mountain peaks ranging from 1,500 meters to 2,500 meters in height.

The province enjoys average temperatures ranging from 17ºC to 22ºC and Type III weather patterns. The dry season extends from November to April. The rest of the year is rainy. The heaviest rains usually occur in the months of July and October.

SYMBOLISM


Shield, bottom portion represents the age-old earthware Kalingas used in cooking. It also depicts that the province is sitting on a “Pot of Gold” meaning its rich mineral resources. The top portion represents the five highest mountain peaks, the curvature in-between represents the rugged, undulating mountain chain that hems the borderlands of the province.

Cross, divides the shield into quadrants which reflect that Christianity is now wholly embraced by the inhabitants.

Mountain, “Sleeping Beauty”, Kalinga's foremost tourism landmark, so called because of the woman figure supinely resting on top of a mountain; woven into a love story that is now a part of Kalinga’s cultural treasure.

Rising Sun, depicts the glories of the people’s past and the light of knowledge and vision of its people.

Waterfalls, depict Kalinga as the “Land of Beautiful Waterfalls”

Dam, represents the Chico River Irrigation project.

Layer of Earthen Pots, represents all the wealth of the province which are fragile and therefore must be protected by the Kalingas for sustainable development.

Coffee, Berries and Oranges, represent the major fruit exports of the province; Kalinga’s ‘Gayonan” are considered as among the world’s most delicious tangerines.

Eight Steps Rice Terraces, represent the eight original municipalities constituting the province of Kalinga.

Lowland Plain, represents the sprawling “Rice Granary of the Cordilleras” at Tabuk and Rizal.

Cart with Peak, Shade and Minerals, represents the mineral resources of Kalinga.

Tower and Power Lines, represent the energy resources of Kalinga, the geothermal resource which is one of the biggest sources of electric power in Luzon that is found in the province.

Carabao Head, represents the livestock industry which is still the most important work animal in the province.

Golden Earring, represents the Kalinga’s golden earring called “Lobay”

Map, represents the Kalingas geographical area showing the eight municipalities.

Shield, Spear and Axe, represent the common weapons of the natives of Kalinga; symbolic of the honor code of the Kalingas in their deep sense of justice.

Colors Ruby Red, Golden Yellow, Black, Hues of Green, Sky Blue and Brown, Kalinga colors that signify a bright tomorrow for Kalingas, peace and unity.

1995, on a Kalinga Multicolored G-string coin girdle scroll, marks the birth year of the province.

Political Subdivision

When Kalinga was created as a separate province from Apayao in 1995, it had 8 municipalities. On June 23, 2007, however, Tabuk became a component city by virtue of Republic Act No. 9404. Kalinga at present is politically divided into 1 city, 7 municipalities and 152 barangays with the City of Tabuk as its capital. Some basic information of Tabuk and the 7 municipalities are as follows:

Tourist Attractions

The province is a land of natural charm and beauty with its natural attractions of majestic mountains, caves, rustic villages, and rice terraces. It is a land of mystique and legends and tales of the legenday God, Kabunian. A land of living waters, it abounds with rivers and waterfalls. Its rivers snake around villages and its underground rivers murmur beneath its gold encrusted mountain slopes.

Some of the places in the area which are most likely to be seen or cited by visitors are the following: Sleeping Beauty - Tinglayan; Kabunyan Natural Dam and Pasil River - Pasil; Preserved Tributary Falls and Forest, and Saltan River - Balbalan; Capitol Provincial Park and Chico River - Tabuk; Biggest Acacia Tree - Pinukpuk. The Pasil, Saltan and Chico Rivers are the premier whitewater rafting places in the region if not in the nation. For whitewater rafting trips, these rivers not only offers rapid-fire excitement but also a glimpse of the cultural history of the Kalinga people.


Tourism Events

Ullalim Festival

The Ullalim Festival is celebrated every 15th of February. This is a cultural festival where all guests and visitors are treated to an ethnic presentation of major Kalinga cultural practices, songs and dances. All eight municipalities of the Province of Kalinga regularly participate in this event.
